The novel begins in the early 1800s, with the birth of John Harte, the patriarch of the family. John is a farmer and a devout Christian. He and his wife, Mary, have six children: three boys and three girls. The Harte family lives a simple life on their farm in Kentucky. However, their lives are forever changed by the outbreak of the Civil War.

John and his two oldest sons, William and James, enlist in the Union Army. They fight in some of the bloodiest battles of the war, including the Battle of Gettysburg. Mary and the younger children are left alone on the farm. They struggle to make ends meet and to keep their farm from being taken over by Confederate soldiers.

After the war, the Harte family is reunited. However, they are not the same family they were before the war. John and his sons have been deeply scarred by their experiences on the battlefield. Mary is a changed woman, too. She has become more independent and self-reliant. The children have grown up quickly and have had to take on more responsibility than they should have.

The Harte family decides to leave Kentucky and start a new life in the West. They travel by wagon train to Oregon, where they hope to find a new home. However, their journey is not without its challenges. They face harsh weather, dangerous animals, and hostile Native Americans. But through it all, the Harte family perseveres. They arrive in Oregon and build a new life for themselves. They are a strong and resilient family, and they are determined to make a success of their new home.
