The Toymaker is the 24th book in the Ennin Mystery series by Robert Van Gulik. The book is set in 7th-century China and follows Judge Dee as he investigates the murder of a toymaker.
The story begins when Judge Dee is called to investigate the murder of a toymaker named Zhang. Zhang was found dead in his workshop, with a knife in his chest. The police suspect that Zhang was killed by his apprentice, but Judge Dee is not so sure.
Judge Dee begins his investigation by interviewing Zhang's family and friends. He learns that Zhang was a kind and generous man, who was loved by all who knew him. However, Judge Dee also learns that Zhang had a secret: he was a gambler. Zhang owed a lot of money to a local loan shark, and Judge Dee suspects that the loan shark may have killed Zhang.
Judge Dee continues his investigation, and he eventually uncovers a plot to overthrow the government. The plot is led by a powerful general named Li. Li has been amassing an army in secret, and he plans to use the army to seize power from the emperor.
Judge Dee must stop Li before he can carry out his plan. He must also find the killer of Zhang. Judge Dee is a brilliant detective, and he is determined to solve both cases.
The Toymaker is a well-written and exciting mystery novel. The book is full of twists and turns, and the reader is kept guessing until the very end. Judge Dee is a fascinating character, and the reader will enjoy following him as he investigates the murder of the toymaker and the plot to overthrow the government.
