William Rehnquist served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1986 to 2005. He was a conservative jurist who had a profound impact on American law. William Hubbs Rehnquist was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1924. He graduated from Stanford University and Stanford Law School. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Rehnquist clerked for Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson.

In 1971, President Richard Nixon appointed Rehnquist to the Supreme Court. Rehnquist quickly became one of the most conservative members of the Court. He was a strong advocate for judicial restraint and originalism.
