People Who Made Sure You Could Grow Up To Vote: Children’s Modern History
The right to vote is one of the most important rights we have as Americans. It allows us to have a say in who represents us in government and how our country is run. But did you know that there was a time when not everyone in the United States could vote? For many years, only white male landowners were allowed to vote. It wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that women and people of color fought for and won the right to vote.
In this blog post, we’re going to learn about some of the people who fought for the right to vote for all Americans. These are people who believed that everyone should have a say in our democracy, no matter their race, gender, or economic status. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, we all have the right to vote today.

Susan B. Anthony
Susan B. Anthony was one of the most famous leaders of the women’s suffrage movement. She co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869 and worked tirelessly for the right of women to vote. In 1872, she was arrested for illegally voting in the presidential election. Her trial brought national attention to the issue of women’s suffrage, and helped to build support for the movement.
Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass was a former slave who became a leading abolitionist and advocate for the right to vote for all Americans. He escaped from slavery in 1845 and went on to become a powerful voice for freedom and equality. He spoke out against slavery, racism, and discrimination, and he fought for the right of all Americans to vote.
Alice Paul
Alice Paul was another leading figure in the women’s suffrage movement. She founded the National Woman’s Party in 1916 and organized a series of protests and demonstrations to demand the right to vote for women. She was arrested several times for her activism, but she never gave up on her goal. In 1920, the 19th Amendment was passed, granting women the right to vote.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a leading figure in the civil rights movement. He fought for the end of segregation and discrimination, and he also worked to ensure that all Americans had the right to vote. He led the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed, which outlawed racial discrimination in voting.
The people we’ve learned about today are just a few of the many who have fought for the right to vote for all Americans. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, we all have the right to have a say in our democracy. It’s important to remember their stories and to continue to fight for the right to vote for all.
