In this book, Dr. Kenneth R. Brindisi, a former SUNY Chancellor, examines the governance crisis at SUNY and offers a path to renewed greatness. Drawing on his own experience and insights, Dr. Brindisi argues that SUNY's problems are rooted in a lack of accountability and transparency, and he proposes a series of reforms to address these issues.

The Governance Crisis and the Path to Renewed Greatness is an essential read for anyone who cares about the future of higher education in New York State. Dr. Brindisi's insights and recommendations will be invaluable for policymakers, educators, and students alike.

Chapter 1: The Governance Crisis

In Chapter 1, Dr. Brindisi provides a detailed overview of the governance crisis at SUNY. He describes the various scandals and controversies that have plagued the system in recent years, including the resignation of former Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and the controversial appointment of interim Chancellor Kristina Johnson.

Dr. Brindisi argues that the governance crisis at SUNY is rooted in a lack of accountability and transparency. He points out that the SUNY Board of Trustees is largely appointed by the Governor, and that the Board has often been reluctant to hold the Chancellor accountable for his or her actions.

Dr. Brindisi also criticizes SUNY's opaque budgeting process, which has made it difficult for the public to understand how the system's money is being spent. He argues that SUNY needs to be more transparent about its finances and that the public needs to have more input into the budgeting process.

Chapter 2: The Path to Renewed Greatness

In Chapter 2, Dr. Brindisi offers a path to renewed greatness for SUNY. He proposes a series of reforms that would address the governance crisis and improve the system's overall performance.

Dr. Brindisi's reforms include:

  • Creating a more independent SUNY Board of Trustees
  • Increasing transparency and accountability in the budgeting process
  • Empowering faculty and staff to have a greater voice in governance
  • Investing in SUNY's campuses and programs

Dr. Brindisi argues that these reforms would help SUNY to regain its status as a world-class university system. He believes that SUNY can once again be a beacon of hope and opportunity for students from all backgrounds.
