Juno Be Kelly, A Transgender Pioneer Who Lived In Australia In The Early 1900s Juno BE Kelly

Juno Be Kelly was a remarkable individual who defied gender norms and left an unforgettable mark on Australian history. Born as William Be Kelly in 1863, Juno transitioned to live as a woman in their early twenties, becoming one of the first known transgender people in Australia.

Early Life and Transition

Juno was born in York, Western Australia, in 1863, to Irish immigrants. From a young age, they felt a deep sense of misalignment with their assigned sex at birth. As they grew older, Juno's discomfort intensified, and they began to explore their gender identity.

In the early 1890s, Juno decided to transition to live as a woman. They changed their name, adopted feminine clothing, and began to present themselves as Juno Be Kelly.

Juno joined the Australian Labor Party and became actively involved in politics. They advocated for the rights of women, the poor, and the marginalized. Juno was a vocal critic of discrimination based on gender, class, and sexuality.

In 1913, Juno became the first known transgender person to stand for public office in Australia. They ran as a candidate for the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, although they were not elected.

Challenging the Status Quo

Juno's advocacy went beyond politics. They were also a trailblazer in the arts and entertainment industry. In 1903, Juno performed in a controversial play that challenged gender stereotypes. The play caused an uproar, but Juno remained undeterred.

Juno also wrote and published several books, including "My Story" (1918),which is considered one of the earliest autobiographies written by a transgender person.

A Legacy of Courage and Resilience

Juno's story is a reminder that gender is not binary and that people should be free to express their true selves without fear of judgment or discrimination.

Juno Be Kelly was an extraordinary individual who left an indelible mark on Australian history. Their trailblazing spirit and unwavering commitment to social justice continue to inspire and empower LGBTQ+ people today.
