About the Composer
Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist of the Baroque period. He is considered one of the greatest composers of all time.
Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany, on March 21, 1685. He was the son of Johann Ambrosius Bach, a musician, and Maria Elisabeth Lämmerhirt. Bach's father died when he was 10 years old, and he was raised by his older brother, Johann Christoph Bach, who was also a musician.
Bach began his musical education at a young age. He studied the organ with his brother and the harpsichord with his cousin, Johann Gottfried Walther. Bach also studied composition with Johann Christoph Schmidt, who was the organist at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.
In 1703, Bach became the organist at the New Church in Arnstadt. He held this position for three years, during which time he composed some of his most famous organ works, including the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.
In 1707, Bach became the organist at the St. Blasius Church in Mühlhausen. He held this position for two years, during which time he composed some of his most famous cantatas, including the "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben" (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life).
In 1708, Bach became the court organist and Konzertmeister at the Weimar court. He held this position for nine years, during which time he composed some of his most famous orchestral works, including the Brandenburg Concertos.
In 1717, Bach became the Kapellmeister at the Cöthen court. He held this position for six years, during which time he composed some of his most famous chamber music, including the Six Suites for Violoncello Solo.
In 1723, Bach became the Thomaskantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. He held this position until his death in 1750. During his time in Leipzig, Bach composed some of his most famous choral works, including the Mass in B Minor.
Bach died in Leipzig on July 28, 1750. He was 65 years old.
