How Are Planets Named?

The planets in our solar system are named after Roman gods and goddesses. For example, Mercury is named after the Roman god of trade and travel, and Venus is named after the Roman goddess of beauty and love. The other planets are named after the Roman gods of war (Mars),agriculture (Jupiter),and the sea (Neptune). Pluto, which was once considered a planet but is now classified as a dwarf planet, is named after the Roman god of the underworld.

The Planets In The Solar System

The solar system consists of the sun, eight planets, and numerous moons, asteroids, and comets. The planets are divided into two groups: the inner planets and the outer planets. The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

The Inner Planets

The inner planets are made of rock and metal. They are relatively small and have few moons. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and is the smallest planet in the solar system. Venus is the second planet from the sun and is the hottest planet in the solar system. Earth is the third planet from the sun and is the only planet in the solar system that is known to support life. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and is the second smallest planet in the solar system.

The Outer Planets

The outer planets are made of gas and ice. They are much larger than the inner planets and have many moons. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and is the largest planet in the solar system. Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and is the second largest planet in the solar system. Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun and is the third largest planet in the solar system. Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun and is the fourth largest planet in the solar system.

Fun Facts About The Planets

  • Mercury is the only planet in the solar system that does not have any moons.
  • Venus is the only planet in the solar system that rotates clockwise.
  • Earth is the only planet in the solar system that has liquid water on its surface.
