Michael Collins
Michael Collins was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1890. He joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1916, he played a leading role in the Easter Rising, an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow British rule in Ireland. After the Rising, Collins was imprisoned by the British but was released in 1919. He then became the Director of Intelligence for the IRA and was responsible for organizing the guerrilla campaign against the British.
Éamon de Valera
Éamon de Valera was born in New York City in 1882. His parents were Irish immigrants, and he moved to Ireland with his family when he was a child. De Valera joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913 and fought in the Easter Rising. After the Rising, he was sentenced to death by the British but was later reprieved. He was elected President of the Irish Republic in 1919 and led the Irish delegation to the peace talks that ended the Irish War of Independence.
The Irish War of Independence
The Irish War of Independence was fought between the Irish Republican Army and the British government from 1919 to 1921. The war ended with the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which established the Irish Free State.
The Irish Free State
The Irish Free State was a self-governing dominion within the British Empire. It was established by the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921. The Free State was led by Éamon de Valera, who served as its first President.
The Irish Civil War
The Irish Civil War was fought between the Irish Free State government and the Irish Republican Army from 1922 to 1923. The war ended with the defeat of the IRA.
Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera
Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera were two of the most important figures in Irish history. They were both brilliant leaders but also had very different visions for Ireland. Collins was a pragmatist who believed that Ireland could best achieve independence through a negotiated settlement with Britain. De Valera was a more radical nationalist who believed that Ireland should be a completely independent republic.
The relationship between Collins and de Valera was complex and often strained. However, they were both committed to the cause of Irish independence and worked together to achieve it.
Big Fellow, Long Fellow is a fascinating and insightful biography of two of the most important figures in Irish history. The book explores the complex relationship between these two men and their different visions for Ireland. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Irish history.
