The Early Years: Pioneers of Speed Metal
Anvil was formed in Toronto, Canada in 1978 by guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and bassist Ian "Dice" Dickson. The band quickly gained a reputation for their blistering speed and raw energy, pioneering a sound that would later be known as speed metal. They released their debut album, "Hard 'n' Heavy," in 1981, which was met with critical acclaim. However, commercial success eluded them, as the album failed to make a significant impact on the charts.
The Pursuit of Success: Ups and Downs
Undeterred, Anvil continued to tour and release albums throughout the 1980s. They signed with a major label, Atlantic Records, in 1983, and released their breakthrough album, "Metal on Metal." The album featured the hit single "Six Feet Under," which helped the band gain a wider audience. However, their follow-up albums failed to live up to expectations, and the band was dropped by Atlantic Records in 1989.
The 1990s were a difficult time for Anvil. They struggled to find a record deal and were forced to take on odd jobs to make ends meet. Despite these challenges, they refused to give up on their music. They continued to write and perform, and their loyal fans remained steadfast in their support.
A Second Chance: The Documentary and Beyond
In 2008, Anvil was featured in a documentary film called "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." The film chronicled the band's struggles and triumphs, and it garnered widespread critical acclaim. The film's release breathed new life into Anvil's career, and they signed a new record deal with Metal Blade Records. They have since released several acclaimed albums, including "Juggernaut of Justice" (2011),"Hope in Hell" (2013),and "Pounding the Pavement" (2016).
Today, Anvil continues to tour and record, inspiring a new generation of heavy metal fans. Their story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring spirit of rock 'n' roll.
A Book of Inspiration and Resilience
In 2018, Anvil released their first book, "Anvil: The Story of Anvil." Co-written with award-winning music journalist Mark Voren, the book delves into the band's incredible journey, from their early days in Toronto to their present-day status as heavy metal icons.
"Anvil: The Story of Anvil" is not just a biography of a band. It is a story of friendship, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of a dream. It is a book that will inspire readers from all walks of life, regardless of their musical tastes.
